Período em que o país estava sob um governo ditatorial que ascendeu ao poder mediante um golpe militar. Através de protestos, os movimentos estudantis e de trabalhadores reivindicavam democracia e o fim da Lei Marcial, lei essa que suspende as leis de um país, passando a vigorar leis militares. Durante um desses protestos, na cidade de Gwangju, o exército sul coreano abriu fogo contra a sua própria população. O clima de guerra continuou por mais alguns dias com prisões arbitrárias, crimes de tortura, execuções sumárias e desaparecimentos. De acordo com associações de familiares das vítimas, estima-se que aproximadamente pessoas morreram durante aqueles dias. E é justamente em Gwangju, em maio de 1980, que se passa a maior parte da história entre Hwang Hee-tae, interpretado por Lee Do-hyun que entregou tudo como protagonista e Kim Myung-he, interpretada por Go Min-si. Após vender seu carro, acompanhamos sua ida a um hospital para pagar as despesas médicas de uma moça gravemente ferida. Conforme a série avança, vamos entendendo o vínculo entre eles. Ao visitá-la, ele ouve que ela quer ir embora para casa. Por entender que talvez esse possa ser o último desejo da moça, ele parte para Gwangju, cidade natal de ambos, para tentar transferi-la para lá. É então no hospital de Gwangju, onde ele está resolvendo os trâmites da transferência, que ele encontra pela primeira vez a enfermeira Kim Myung-hee. Ele fica bem impressionado ao vê-la enfrentando com coragem o diretor do hospital. Coragem também não faltou a Hwang Hee-tae para voltar para a casa de seu pai, o Sr. Hwang Gi-nam Oh Man-seok, de “Pousando no Amor“, que não ficou nada feliz ao rever o filho mais velho. Afinal, Hwang Hae-tae não pediu sua permissão para sair de Seul. O estudante então explica que precisa de dinheiro para resolver algumas coisas na cidade, sem mencionar nada sobre a transferência hospitalar. Ele promete ao pai ser obediente em tudo dali em diante. É assim que fica marcado o encontro às cegas entre Lee Soo-ryeon e Hwang Hee-tae. Lee Soo-ryeon Keum Sae-rok, de “The Fiery Priest” é universitária e está envolvida diretamente com as manifestações estudantis, que nesse momento da história ainda não são represadas de maneira tão violenta. Para ela, uma militante ferrenha contra o governo, a ideia de sair com o filho do homem que manda prender manifestantes soa como um absurdo. Só mesmo sendo obrigada pelo pai ela vai aceitar ir.
